PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY
Mid-career researcher (39 yr, PhD 2009) that has already coordinated 13 research projects focused on polar terrestrial ecosystems funded by public and private international agencies. After 8 years at the Antarctic Environments and Climate Change research group of the University of Lisbon (Portugal), I started a new challenge in May 2017 as Ramón y Cajal researcher at the Department of Geography of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), where I am expanding my areas of research, fields and study topics. I have also conducted research at the University of Bern (Switzerland), University of Ottawa (Canada) and Centre for Research and Teaching in Environmental Geoscience (France). I lead a research group on Antarctic, Arctic and Alpine Environments (ANTALP). My research interests include the study of cold-climate geomorphological processes and past environments in the polar regions and high mountains using a wide range of natural records (glacial, periglacial, lacustrine). I have carried out 8 field seasons in Antarctica and 4 in the Arctic, with one year and a half of field experience in the polar regions. Apart from Sierra Nevada, where I focused my PhD, I have conducted research in other mountain regions (Rockies, Alps, Pamir, Tien Shan, Pyrenees, Cantabrian Mountains), which has provided me a wide comprehension of Earth surface processes in cold-climate environments. I have published 92 SCI papers (66, last 5 years), most of them in top journals (65, Q1) on geomorphological and palaeoclimate topics (71 articles with none of my PhD supervisors as co-authors, and many include my students), 84 book chapters, 187 abstracts in conferences and coordinated 4 books and 10 Special Issues in SCI journals. The last book “Past Antarctica” (Elsevier, 2020) will be a reference for world-leading experts working in past environments in the polar regions. I have also conducted dozens of outreach activities for an audience beyond academia (lectures, webs, exhibitions). All these research outputs have been carried out in parallel to my teaching activities at different European universities.
