MARC OLIVA
Mid-career researcher (PhD 2009), “Profesor Titular” at the Dept. of Geography of the Univ. Barcelona (UB). After 8 years at the Antarctic Environments and Climate Change group of the Univ. Lisboa, in May’17 I started as RyC researcher at Geography-UB, where I have expanded my research fields and study topics. I have also conducted research at the Univ. Bern (Switzerland) and Univ. Ottawa (Canada). Currently, I lead a research group on Antarctic, Arctic and Alpine Environments (ANTALP). I have carried out 8 field seasons in Antarctica and 8 in the Arctic, with ca. 2 years spent in the polar regions. My research interests include the study of cold climate geomorphological processes and past environments in polar and high mountains regions using a wide range of natural records (glacial, periglacial, lacustrine). As PI I have coordinated 26 projects at European (INTERREG-POCTEFA, INTERACT-EU, AXA RF) and national level (Spanish/Catalan, Portuguese) and (ca. 4.5 M€). I am currently leading a major European project on permafrost and related hazards in the Pyrenees as well as the largest polar project ever funded in Spain. I have published 155 peer-reviewed papers (Scopus, 15-7-2024), most in top journals (90, Q1) on geomorphological and paleoclimate topics, 116 book chapters, 235 conference abstracts and coordinated 10 books and 12 Special Issues in journals. The last books I have published with Elsevier/SpringerNature (“Past Antarctica”, “Iberia, land of glaciers”, “The landscape of Sierra Nevada”, “Periglacial landscapes of Europe”) are a reference for researchers working on past environments in the polar regions and mid-latitude mountains; in addition, I have just coordinated the book “Global Change” (with Edicions UB in Spanish, SpringerNature in English), a handbook for students and professionals on the topics. I have also carried out dozens of outreach activities for an audience beyond academia (lectures, social networks, exhibitions). All these research outputs have been carried out in parallel to my teaching activities at different European universities (Portugal, Russia, Spain).
